The inquiry for funds in banks came from varied interests, and seemed to indicate that despite the seasonable quiet in general trade preparations were making for much activity later on. Bank clearings for the five business days of the week amounted to rA, an increase of $1,000,000 over the corresponding week of last year. Speculation cut no figure in any of the transactions of the week, and nothing occurred to dampen the confident feeling that prevails in business circles. The weekly statement of the New York associated banks gives evidence of a decided improvement in the financial situation at New York. The banks are stronger from all points of view than they were at the end of the preceding week.

There is a gain of in actual reserve, the Increase in specie being $4,241,900 sad the loss in legal-tenders $1.059,100.
